48 Hours in Lisbon: A First-Timer's Itinerary

Day one — Alfama and the old city

Start with the iconic Tram 28 before the queues build, then wander Alfama's tiled lanes down to the river. Climb to the Miradouro das Portas do Sol for the postcard view.

Day two — Belém and the waterfront

Head west to Belém for the monastery and tower, and don't skip the original pastéis de nata at the famous bakery. Finish with sunset along the Tagus.

  • Buy a rechargeable Viva Viagem card for trams and metro

  • Wear shoes with grip — the calçada pavement is slippery

  • Book Jerónimos Monastery ahead to skip the line
